Nate's Monday Morning Message

Nate’s Monday Morning Message

Welcome to Nate's Monday Morning Message! In 1868 General John A. Logan, the leader of an organization for Northern Civil War Veterans called for a day of remembrance, which was called Decoration Day. People decorated the graves of men who had died in defense of their country during the late rebellion. On the first Decoration Day, more than 5,000 people participated, decorating the graves of 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers. It was later changed to Memorial Day and officially became a federal holiday in 1971.

Today is not just a three-day weekend but an important day to honor and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedom we value so much in our country. I hope that before you fire up the BBQ grill and jump in the pool, that you and your families will take a moment to say thank you. I know that many of you reading this have lost a loved one in the name of freedom. Let’s remember them, today and always. Make it a great week!

WORDS OF INSPIRATION

“137 years later, Memorial Day remains one of America's most cherished patriotic observances. The spirit of this day has not changed - it remains a day to honor those who died defending our freedom and democracy.” - Doc Hastings

“My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” - John F. Kennedy

“On Memorial Day, I don't want to only remember the combatants. There were also those who came out of the trenches as writers and poets, who started preaching peace, men and women who have made this world a kinder place to live.” - Eric Burdon

“There is nothing nobler than risking your life for your country.” - Nick Lampson

“In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Nate's Monday Morning Message

Welcome to this week’s Monday Morning Message! What an exciting week for many young people across the country, as they prepare for one of the biggest milestones in life – graduation. The journey is just beginning whether it is high school graduation or college. I love this graduation speech delivered by Denzel Washington a few years ago; fall back or fall forward. Life is full of endless opportunities but many of us miss them because we are afraid to fail. But it takes more guts to try, and fail than it does to fall back. So, this week I ask you: Do you have the guts to fail? Let’s make it a great week!

Nate’s Monday Morning Message

Welcome to this week’s Monday Morning Message! If you have ever watched even one Star Wars movie, you recognize this saying: Do. Or do not. There is no try. Yoda was on to something when he coined this phrase.

The word “try” is an excuse in advance. Think about how this applies to your life. What have you been “trying” to do that just never seems to get done? When you string together the words, “I am going to try to {fill in the blank}”…does it ever really get done? I am going to guess the answer is no. This week, let’s remove the word try from our vocabulary. Instead of try, let’s commit to those activities we need or want to do in our lives. Replace the word “try” with “I am going to…” Or “I will.” Let’s make it a great week!

ENCOURAGEMENT CORNER

Weakness or Strength?

Sometimes your biggest weakness can become your biggest strength. Take, for example, the story of one 10-year-old boy who decided to study judo despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a devastating car accident.

The boy began lessons with an old Japanese judo master. The boy was doing well, so he couldn't understand why, after three months of training the master had taught him only one move.

"Sensei," the boy finally said, "Shouldn't I be learning more moves?"

"This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you'll ever need to know," the sensei replied.

Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training.

Several months later, the sensei took the boy to his first tournament. Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent became impatient and charged; the boy deftly used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals.

This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched. Concerned that the boy might get hurt, the referee called a time-out. He was about to stop the match when the sensei intervened.

"No," the sensei insisted, "Let him continue."

Soon after the match resumed, his opponent made a critical mistake: he dropped his guard. Instantly, the boy used his move to pin him. The boy had won the match and the tournament. He was the champion.

On the way home, the boy and sensei reviewed every move in each and every match. Then the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really on his mind.

"Sensei, how did I win the tournament with only one move?"

"You won for two reasons," the sensei answered. "First, you've almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. And second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grip your left arm."

The boy's biggest weakness had become his biggest strength.

Nate’s Monday Morning Message

Welcome to this week’s Monday Morning Message! Mother’s Day is right around the corner and in honor of my mother, the mother of my children, my daughter and all the wonderful mothers I know, I want to dedicate this Monday Morning Message to them. When I was growing up, I did not realize how hard my mother worked to put food on the table and a roof over our heads. In witnesses that demanding work, and unconditional love, she inspired me to become the man I have. What a gift.

To my mother, Tonya and Brandi: Thank you for all that you have done, and all that you do every day. My world is a better place because of the unconditional, unwavering love that each of you bring to my life. Happy Mother’s Day to you and all the mothers reading this today!
