Today, Glendale is a sports destination for football fans, hockey fans and those who enjoy the outdoors while taking in a spring training baseball game. With state-of-the-art facilities like the Jobing.com Arena and University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale is the host of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, BCS Championship games as well the 2008 Super Bowl.

Before the notoriety Glendale earned as the sporting hot-spot in Arizona, it was an empty desert which later fostered a large part of Arizona’s fruit farming industry. In 1882, William J. Murphy, along with three local builders, M.W. Kales, William A. Hancock and Clark Churchill, created the Arizona Canal Co. project, which would bring water to the area.

As the area continued to develop, Glendale’s Beet Sugar Factory was an important part of the city’s early economic success. The structure still stands today just southeast of downtown Glendale. Farms and orchards grew throughout the early 1900s. Other historic businesses include the Glendale Ice Co., the Pacific Creamery Co., the Southwest Flour and Feed Co. and the Glendale Milling Co.

Today, Glendale is still well-known for its fabulous art district and antique collecting, however other economic contributors include retail, Honeywell, Luke Air Force Base, medical, education and resale real estate and development.
